Captain America: Civil War cast revealed!!

We might as well just start calling it "Avengers 2.5"

With Captain America: Civil War slated to be released in May 2016, shooting has already begun on the picture, which will be the 13th chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe anthology, and the first film in its third Phase. Joe and Anthony Russo are returning to direct, with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely also returning to pen the script. These 4 talented individuals were responsible for Marvel's most emotionally deep and narratively complex movie "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", which is also one of my personal favourites. If any creative team can capture the drama of the Civil War comic book run and translate it to fit cohesively into the Marvel timeline, it's them. I'm super pumped for this film, and this cast list justifies my hype.

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

By the looks of things, it seems like the film will continue to examine this concept of how to go about safeguarding humanity, something they touched upon in both "The Winter Soldier" and "Age of Ultron". The international incident which results in collateral damage sounds to me as if that will be the trigger cause for the registration act to be implemented by the government. It also sounds to me that this "new and nefarious villain" is referring to Daniel Bruhl's character, who is 90% Baron Zemo. Obviously it could also be referring to Frank Grillo's Crossbones, who will no doubt have an equally large role as Bruhl and will probably be collaborating with the HYDRA general. At the end of the day, it is still a Captain America movie, so HYDRA must have a reasonably large presence.

Confirmed "Avengers"

Because of the magnitude of the event, many predicted that a fair few of the Avengers would be returning for Cap's third solo outing. This speculation was fully warranted. The Avengers which we will see choose between anti-registration or pro-registration, Rogers and Stark, is below:

Captain America - Chris Evans

Iron Man - Robert Downey Jr

Black Widow - Scarlett Johansson

Falcon - Anthony Mackie

Vision - Paul Bettany

Hawkeye - Jeremy Renner

War Machine - Don Cheadle

Scarlet Witch - Elizabeth Olsen

Ant Man - Paul Rudd

Wow. Not only will we see both Iron Man and Hawkeye return to the superhero fold alongside all 6 of the new Avengers line-up, we will also see Paul Rudd's Ant Man appear amongst these other heroes, which indicates to me that he may well be an Avenger at the very beginning of the film, which causes my head to spout ideas as to what the post credits scene of July's Ant Man will be.

I think its also interesting to try and predict the sides which the Avengers will choose. Interesting, if not really freaking difficult. I'll guess we'll have to wait until the first trailer comes out; a very long time.

Confirmed "others"

Those were merely the Avenger's characters in the film, many more actors have been confirmed:

Winter Soldier - Sebastian Stan

Black Panther - Chadwick Boseman

Agent 13 - Emily VanCamp

Crossbones - Frank Grillo

General "Thunderbolt" Ross - William Hurt

Both Daniel Bruhl and Martin Freeman have been confirmed with unspecified roles, although it is strongly believed they will play the aforementioned Baron Zemo and Everett Ross respectively, who is linked to the Black Panther character in the sense that he will probably be assigned to investigate Black Panther after the registration act is passed.

The Winter Soldier will again be played by Sebastian Stan. After the second Captain America movie, Bucky began to regain the parts of his memory which HYDRA wiped out when they turned him into their number 1 assassin. Because Bucky is so important to Cap's character, expect him to have a considerable role in the film, and possibly see him join Captain America's cause.

Also confirmed is Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther. Prince of Wakanda, the African nation home to the vibranium metal, it sounds to me as if he will have his own story arc in the film, which may see him avoid having to choose either Team Stark or Team Rogers. T'Challa may well be investigating the Avenger's involvement in Ultron's creation and how the metal native to his homeland became involved in the mess. He'll have his own agenda, and hopefully will join the Avengers ranks during Infinity War.

Both Frank Grillo and Emily VanCamp will reprise their roles from "Winter Soldier", with the former returning in full-on supervillain badass mode, with half his face burned off. William Hurt's General Ross has not been seen since 2008's The Incredible Hulk (Marvel's estranged son), but his character's inclusion makes perfect sense, and there's no denying what side he will fall on.

Who's missing

I strongly believe Spiderman will make his MCU debut in Civil War, regardless of the size of his role. The lack of confirmation for the web-slinger doesn't worry me in the slightest. As far as I know, Marvel is finalising the chosen persons contract, with them having a shortlist of 5 actors to work with. Spiderman's role within the MCU is too big a deal to not talk about at a later date, but at the moment just be aware that it is very likely we'll see him in Civil War.

Other absentees include Thor and Hulk. Thor will have his hands full investigating Thanos and the Infinity Stones, and Hulk has gone AWOL, temporarily side-lined until Infinity War. As for characters like Nick Fury, Maria Hill, Peggy Carter, Pepper Potts, Ulysses Klaue etc. we could well be seeing some of them in minor roles. As for a Charlie Cox cameo as Daredevil, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Come on Marvel, just a small mention wouldn't go a miss!

Civil War is going to be one hell of a spectacle, indicated by the sheer size of the main cast. It's going to be as big a movie as Age of Ultron, and it will probably have more serious repercussions for all of our characters, both old and new. It's Marvel's biggest film to date with enormous ramifications for the future of the MCU. In the Russo's we trust!

Thanks for reading,
Matt
