The Avengers: Age of Ultron SPOILER Discussion (part 2)

This is another official HEAVY SPOILER WARNING for Avengers: Age of Ultron. If you have not seen the film, then please do not read any further. If you have, then please feel free to continue. Let's talk the post credits scene and all of the tie-ins to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

If you haven't already please read my spoiler free review and (if you've seen the film) the first part of my Age of Ultron spoiler discussion, where I cover all of the major events of the film as its own entity. Now its time to discuss Age of Ultron in a much broader context, and how it connects into future film instalments of the MCU.

------------------FINAL SPOILER WARNING FOR AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON------------------

Links to Avengers: Infinity War

There was only one after the credits scene attached to The Avengers: Age of Ultron, and like the scene after the credits during the first Avengers movie, we are teased with the ultimate big bad of the Marvel Universe, the Mad Titan himself, Thanos. The scene is very simple; it is located inside a vault which is opening. Inside said vault is the Infinity Gauntlet (sans the 6 stones) and you see Thanos reach in, grab it and put it on. He utters "fine, I'll do it myself".

Kevin Feige has confirmed that the vault we see here is not in Asgard. In the first Thor movie, we see the Infinity Gauntlet on display in Asgard. This can mean one of 2 options; the first and the least likely option is there are 2 gauntlets of equal power. The second is the one in Asgard is simply a replica, which makes more sense.

This is ultimately teasing the 2 part Avengers: Infinity War movies set for release in May 2018 and May 2019. The Gauntlet, if combined with the 6 Infinity Stones, gives it's wielder omnipotence, the power to bend the universe at will. Remember during Thor's Vision when we saw the Tesseract, the Aether, the Orb and the stone in Loki's Scepter? Those are the 4 Infinity Stones we have seen so far. After he has his Vision, Thor then uses his lightning powers to create the Vision character, who is now housing the stone that was in Loki's Scepter.

The same vision also shed light to an "impending doom" for Asgard, which is why Thor decides to leave the Avengers after the battle with Ultron is won. This is where we will pick up with Thor during Thor: Ragnarok, a film which I think will see Thanos make his biggest move yet in terms of collecting the Infinity Stones.

If you're confused, below is a current guide for the Infinity Stones in the MCU:

Stone                       Stone Type                    Colour                       Location/Current Owner

Tesseract ------------Space Stone ------------- Blue -------------------- Asgard (Loki)

Aether --------------- Reality Stone ----------- Red --------------------- The Collector

Orb ------------------ Power Stone ------------ Purple ------------------- Xandar (Nova Corps)

Loki's Scepter ----- Mind Stone ------------- Yellow ------------------- Vision

The 2 Stones we have not seen are the Soul Stone and the Time Stone, one of which will be coloured green and the other coloured orange. I have a feeling that we will see the Soul Stone in 2016's Doctor Strange considering that film offers the possibility of inter-dimensional travel. The Time Stone may appear as early as Guardians 2, in Thor: Ragnarok or as late as the first Infinity War film, which is exciting as they will probably have to introduce time travel into the MCU, something which hasn't been attempted as of yet. Either way, it'll be interesting to see how Thanos collates all of these Stones considering their multitude of locations.

Links to Captain America: Civil War

The conflict between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers was teased on a few occasions during Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it never culminates into anything great, suggesting that all of the conflicts origin will take place in the first act of Captain America: Civil War, set to come out in May 2016.

The 2 foremost Avengers part on good terms. Cap is now currently training a new line-up of Avengers while Tony Stark "retires" from the team. The new Avengers looks like this:

Captain America

Black Widow

War Machine

Falcon

Scarlet Witch

Vision

Following a similar route to Tony Stark is Hawkeye. We saw in the film that he has a family, and often it explores the idea that an Avenger can not lead a normal life if they are still an Avenger. Hawkeye, along with Black Widow, Falcon and Scarlet Witch, has been confirmed for Civil War, so we will hopefully see him come back as Hawkeye once he chooses a side. I also expect us to see War Machine and Vision in Civil War now as well, considering they're confirmed to be part of the new Avengers line-up.

A character we may not be seeing in Civil War is Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. At the end of Age of Ultron, the Hulk cuts all ties with Black Widow and flies away in a SHIELD quinjet. Nick Fury confirms that he is still on Earth somewhere. This means that seeing him in Guardians 2 is unlikely, but it does mean that he can return for Infinity War. I think what they did for the Hulk was smart writing in that they have immediately side lined him but have left the door wide open for him to make a return whenever.

Links to Black Panther

Andy Serkis was brilliant in his brief time as Ulysses Klaue.

In the comic books, Klaue is Black Panther's main adversary, and in the film universe we know he has been branded a thief (quite literally by the burns on his neck) by the Wakandans, most likely because of all of the Vibranium he stole. In the film Ultron chops his arm off, which is also yet another nod to Star Wars that all of the Phase 2 films have done so far.

We will be seeing Black Panther in full costume during Civil War, but we won't see Klaue. We should see him in the standalone Black Panther film though and this time with a sonic sound cannon as a left arm.
